Seregost is a region located in central-northern Mordor that guarded the Mithram Gap, and is a region in Middle-earth: Shadow of War as well as a possible location in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

The region is comprised of steep mountain passes, often with sheer drops or curving roads, and includes several icy passages and a large frozen lake, nearby where many Frost Graugs can be found along with Caragors.

During the events of Shadow of War, the largest fortress in the region was at Khagukhôr.

History

After the first downfall of Sauron at the end of the Second Age, the Uruk-hai took control of the region and inhabited it for many centuries until their master’s return. It is a place of unending cold with some sections completely enshrouded in layers of ice. Mining operations dot the landscape to excavate the rich troves of coal used to power the Dark Lord's war machines.

The Bright Lord Cometh

At some point following the fall of Minas Ithil and its becoming Minas Morgul, Talion and Celebrimbor, on the tail-end of their success taking the fortress in Nurnen, turned their sights on the other fortresses of Sauron's forces, and went to Seregost to take the fort there. They eventually succeeded and claimed another territory in Mordor in their war against the Dark Lord.

Terror of the Balrog

As a result of the actions by Zog the Eternal in Gorgoroth, the ancient horror of a Balrog, known as Tar Goroth, was set loose on Mordor, wreaking havoc among the forces of Sauron's Army in its blind thirst for destruction. The trail was followed by Talion all the way to Seregost, until he was caught in an ambush that the Balrog had planned. The Gravewalker was chased through an ice cave, periodically slowing down the pursuing monstrosity by dropping icicles on it until the battle raged out onto the surface of the frozen lake. There, Talion found himself in an increasingly desperate battle to avoid being destroyed by Tar Goroth, but luckily, aid came in the form of the forest sprit, Carnán, taking the form of a drake. Combining forces, the two were able to eventually defeat the Balrog by shattering the ice below its feet, sending it into the frosty depths of the lake where it would remain frozen forever.

A Necromancer's Respite

Following repeated defeats at the hands of Talion and Celebrimber, the necromancer Zog arrived in Seregost to conduct a ritual that would free the re-imprisoned Tar Goroth from the ice lake that it was trapped in before. However, with the Gravewalker's timely arrival and defeat of the necromancer once again, the Balrog was left undisturbed in its ice prison.

The Shadow Wars

There was at least one occurrence of Seregost and the fortress of Khagukhôr being attacked by Sauron's army trying to take it back from the army raised by the rogue Nazgûl, Talion.

The Blade of Galadriel

During the last few decades of the Shadow Wars, the pair of rogue Nazgûl sent two armies to Seregost and Cirith Ungol in a bid for power involving claiming both the Ring of Power worn by Talion and the New Ring. While the Elvish assassin Eltariel, wielding the discarded New Ring, was able to decimate the army at Cirith Ungol, Talion reported that the Nazgûl's army at Seregost was able to retake the fortress of Khagukhôr. Eltariel resolved to take the region out of the conflict permanently. She accomplished this with the help of the Fixer and the Sapper Twins, Flint and Tinder. With the use of the former's extremely potent poison to sabotage the fortress' grog reserves, and after killing the incumbent Overlord, the Sapper Twins detonated the stores and spread a veil of degenerating poison within Khagukhôr, rendering it forever uninhabitable by Sauron's army.

Etymology

Seregost is Sindarin meaning "Blood-fortress".
