Map of Numenor

A map of Numenor.

The Númenóreans (Adunaic: Adûnai) were the Men of Númenór, those descendants of the three houses of the Edain who had settled the Island Realm of Númenór in the Second Age. In the latter history of their country, the Númenóreans were ruled by kings who envied the immortality of the Valar at Valinor, and they began to be influenced by a disguised Sauron as their adviser. Sauron led them and their country to a brutal Morgoth-worshipping cult, but when they and their final king Ar-Pharazon landed on the shores of Valinor, they were buried and those on Numenor drowned as their island sank.

Fate[]

The Númenóreans who fled the sinking of their island consisted of two parties: The Númenóreans of the Elendili who settled the coasts of the Westlands and founded the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor were also known as the Dúnedain and they continued to speak Sindarin as their formal speech of etiquette although they used Adûnaic as their lingua franca, and later its descendant Westron.

The King's Men, or Aruwanai, who settled the coastlands south of Umbar who were called Black Númenóreans by their northern brethren.
