The Desolation of Mordor story expansion is a Downloadable content story expansion for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. It allows the player to take control of Baranor, the captain of Minas Ithil and survivor of the city's demise. Players will command the forces of Men against a new Orc threat to the east.
"Unite with Torvin to craft powerful new combat gear and hire new mercenaries to create a human army and conquer the all new desert region of Lithlad. For the first time in the series, you will fight as a human without the power of a ring or a wraith to cheat death in a new rogue-like campaign mode."
Desolation of Mordor comes with a third campaign focusing on Baranor and his effort to overhrow Sauron's Overlord of Lithlad who nests in the fortress of Shindram. He, assited with Torvin's experimental efforts to restore an ancient Numenorian Tool and the services of local mercenary group he could buy, must conquer the region of Lithlad one Outpost at a time.
The campaign offers several major differences in Gameplay from both the main campaign and Blade of Galadriel.
- Players take control of Baranor, equipped with the Numenorian Tool that functions as Grappling Hook, Crossbow and Shield along with a compact Parachute. Baranor has vastly different capacity from both Talion and Eltariel, both in combat and navigation.
- Baranor has no Ring of Power and thus lack any abiility that came with one. While the Numenorian Tool could stand in as replacement to enhance combat feats, Baranor is mortal, and death in-game would reset the story progress. Upgrades found in the previous playthrough will carry on, however.
- Explore Lithlad in search for upgrades for the Numenorian Tool, enhancing their functinality and giving access to new combat moves. There's no exact pointer in the map, only illustrations that helps in pinpointing their locations. Players will have to analyze and explore the field to reach their maximum combat potential.
- While players are unable to recruit and manage Orcs, they can hire mercenaries as Bodyguards and Warchiefs of conquered outposts. Manage your mercenaries well in preparation to take over Shindram.
The Bright Lord's Fifth FortressEdit
The region of Lithlad also become accessible in the main campaign, complete with Outpost to conquer and the Fortress Shindram being occupied by Sauron's forces. Talion can conquer this region as any other and does Online Conquest or Online Vendetta in it, but conquering it is neither neccesary or influential for the main story.
The Region does not have side quests, collectibles to find or even Haedir towers, but has its own Shadow of the Past missions that are relatively more difficult than the ones in the base game, but rewards players with Perfect-grade gems upon Gold Throphy completion.
Talion can fast travel in the region three points that are also used in Baranor's campaign.
