Sauron, the Dark Lord of the Second and Third Age.
Dark Lord is a title given to Morgoth and Sauron, two of the most powerful and evil beings in Arda.
Both of the Dark Lords were extremely influential in the history and shaping of Middle-earth.
Morgoth was the mightiest of the Valar, though he was not their King. He initially wanted to find the Flame Imperishable and master it to create life. Failing in his quest, he resorted to marring Arda in revenge and ultimately destroy it. Morgoth was defeated in the War of Wrath by the Host of Valinor and cast into the Timeless Void. Sauron was the most powerful Maia of Aulë but fell into Darkness when his desire to order all things according to his will led to his lust for dominion. Leaving the employ of the Valar, he became the greatest servant of Morgoth. After the defeat of his former master, Sauron rose in his place and tried to conquer all of Arda. The destruction of the One Ring resulted in his downfall, after which his weakened spirit shared Morgoth's fate.
